Bellaire, Texas is located seven miles southwest of downtown Houston with a population of approximately 18,862 residents and a span of 3.5 square miles. POSITION SUMMARY:

The purpose of this job is to perform skilled work in maintaining and repairing wastewater equipment including pumps, motors, valves, electrical control panels and components and chemical feed equipment. Works with others in the installation modification, preventive maintenance and repair of wastewater equipment and facilities. This is a safety sensitive position, and you must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen/physical and background investigation.  

POSITION LEVELS:
Plant Operator II - $24.37 - $26.75 per hour
Plant Operator III - $27.59 - $31.22 per hour

Preference will be given to candidates who possess a Class C Ground Water license (or higher).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains plant and related equipment by operating and monitoring pumps, valves, gates and other equipment and performing inspections:
    • Starts and stops pumps
    • Regulates valves and observes flow dials
    • Reads gauges and records information shown
    • Conducts visual inspections of working apparatus and grounds
  • Operates and inspects water treatment plants, lift stations and wastewater plants; and operating a belt press:
    • Records plant operation statistics on log sheets, changes charts and records sheets
    • Inspects motor, bearings, and gear boxes for overheating and proper lubrication
    • Uses meter and gauge readings to determine performance of equipment
    • Performs preventive maintenance and limited repairs
  • Provides supervision by creating work schedules for operators and laborers and serving as the Chief Plant Operator in absence
  • Provides clerical and administrative support by answering phone calls:
    • Assists the Chief Operator with purchase orders; filing paperwork; maintaining computer records; ordering supplies; and copying and faxing documentation
  • Draws samples of water for test and analysis
    • Checks and adjusts chemical feeders in accordance with prescribed standards
    • Sends samples to state-approved lab for testing; and recording findings
  • Performs housekeeping duties to maintain facilities by sweeping and mopping floors; picking up debris; cleaning instruments; painting, light building maintenance, trimming and removing brush; etc.
  • Obtains and maintains water and waste water licenses
  • Trains employees and assists other divisions and departments as needed
  • Follows and upholds City and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Reports to work free from the effects of drugs or controlled substances or alcohol, and free from impairment due to prescription drugs
  • Essential personnel may require 24-hour call-out for emergency or hazardous situations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime including during emergency situations (defined as any natural or man-made disaster that may or may not necessitate the relocation of City personnel or citizens).  In the event of an emergency or a required evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain at work to provide needed services or perform essential duties for the benefit of the general public including services or duties different from those performed in the normal course and scope of the position
 
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Plant Operator II - Pay Grade B06 (Steps E-H) - $23.85 - $26.45/hr

  • 2+ year experience in wastewater and water
  • Preferred 2+ year experience in industrial/commercial mechanical and electrical maintenance
  • Class C Wastewater license
  • Class D Water license (within 18 months of hire date)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Plant Operator III - Pay Grade B06 (Steps I - M) - $27.38 - $30.35/hr
  • 5+ year experience in wastewater and water
  • Preferred 2+ year experience in industrial/commercial mechanical and electrical maintenance
  • Class B Wastewater license
  • Class C Ground Water license 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent


LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Driver’s License and personal insurance coverage
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:
    • Criminal background check
    • Controlled substance screening
    • Medical physical
