CITY SUMMARY:
Bellaire, Texas is located seven miles southwest of downtown Houston with a population of approximately 18,862 residents and a span of 3.5 square miles. Founded in 1908, Bellaire is an enclave residential community surrounded by Houston, offering a quality of life that promotes a family atmosphere with great amenities and the charm of a small town. We provide a full range of services to the community, including police, fire, and solid waste pickup along with excellent parks, recreation, and library. The fire department has one station and responds to approximately 2,000 incidents per year. POSITION SUMMARY:The Paramedic is responsible for maintaining readiness and providing emergency support to preserve the lives and property of the surrounding community in the event of a fire or medical emergency. Performs technical work providing rescue operations, and patient care at the scenes of emergency situations. Operates medical equipment along with a variety of emergency apparatus, maintain paramedic certification, and attending training.
SCHEDULE:Bellaire Fire Department operates on a 48/96 work schedule which means this position receives consistently scheduled overtime hours (8-32 hours per week), dramatically increasing annual pay

- Maintain readiness for and respond to emergency response calls
- Respond to fire and medical emergencies and other related emergency support calls
- Utilize radio, telephone, and dispatch communications media
- Assess emergency situations upon arrival to determine appropriate response and mitigation activities
- Lay and connect hose
- Make forcible entry into buildings as necessary
- Raise and climb ladders and use portable fire extinguishers
- Evacuate persons from danger
- Provide rescue and other emergency related operations
- Determine and operate appropriate equipment to address specific medical and other emergency situations and provide optimal safety
- Performs emergency medical duties through life support care to the ill and injured by assessing the medical needs of patients and determining best immediate treatment
- Administers necessary emergency medical care requiring the use of suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, and cardiac monitors, defibrillator, or pacers, and performance of intubations or advanced airway management
- Provides cardiac monitoring and performs detailed physical exams
- Performs specialized emergency medical care as instructed or approved by the Medical Director while assigned to a fire suppression or medical unit
- Abides by all laws and regulations regarding storage and handling medications and generating reports
- Transports the ill and injured to the appropriate facility through operation of emergency vehicles
- Drives apparatus to emergency scenes and assists patients to emergency centers
- Completes medical reports, stocks medical supplies, and documents all services provided
- Administers necessary emergency medical care requiring the use of suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, and cardiac monitors, defibrillator, or pacers, and performance of intubations or advanced airway management
- Maintains medical equipment and fire station property by performing preventative and disinfectant maintenance on equipment and machinery
- Ensures apparatus is operating properly and safely, determining if problematic or faulty parts exist, replacing faulty parts as assigned
- Assists with fire station cleaning activities and documenting maintenance actions when appropriate
- Performs administrative duties preparing and maintaining reports; assists in planning and implementing Fire Department objectives
- Assists in formulating guidelines, policies, procedures, and protocols; research developments in EMS methods and techniques and attends various meetings and activities
- Educates the community about EMS safety by responding to citizen inquiries and questions on First Aid, presenting safety tips to local schools and businesses, demonstrating appropriate personal actions during fires or emergencies
- Illustrates proper fire extinguisher use and first aid procedures
- Assists with public tours of the fire station when necessary
- Maintains assigned medical certifications by participating in continuing education related to medical, driving and computer skills and completing appropriate paperwork for training received
- Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements
- Performs other duties as assigned within the scope and responsibilities of the position
- Maintain readiness for and respond to emergency response calls
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Citizen of the United States
- Twenty-one (21) years of age or older upon appointment
- Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test
- Experience or training in personal computer use with Microsoft Office software
- LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Texas Driver License
- Must obtain a Class B Driver License during first year of employment and maintain personal vehicle insurance
- Texas DSHS - Paramedic/National Registered Paramedic
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:
- Entry level written examination
- Physical readiness examination
- EMS Skills Proficiency Assessment
- NFPA 1582 Medical Exam Drug Test
- Criminal background check including, but not limited to job history, education, criminal history, and driving record
- Valid Texas Driver License
